Ingredients
- Savoy cabbage - 1 medium head
- Ground beef (or turkey) - 250 grams
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
- Crushed tomatoes - 400 grams
- Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
- Italian seasoning - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Parmesan cheese - 50 grams, grated
- Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
- Fresh basil - a handful, chopped (for garnish)
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Carefully remove 8 large leaves from the cabbage head and blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until softened. Drain and set aside.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
- Add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet, cooking until browned. Season with salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, letting the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in half of the grated Parmesan cheese.
- In an oven-safe dish, layer the bottom with a bit of the meat sauce, then place two cabbage leaves on top. Spoon some of the meat mixture into each leaf and roll them up tightly.
- Repeat until all leaves are filled and arranged in the dish, then top with remaining meat sauce and sprinkle with the rest of the Parmesan cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes to allow the cheese to brown slightly.
- Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
