Ingredients

  • Savoy cabbage - 1 medium head
  • Ground beef (or turkey) - 250 grams
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Crushed tomatoes - 400 grams
  • Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
  • Italian seasoning - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Parmesan cheese - 50 grams, grated
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Fresh basil - a handful, chopped (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Carefully remove 8 large leaves from the cabbage head and blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until softened. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
  4. Add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet, cooking until browned. Season with salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, letting the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes until thickened.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in half of the grated Parmesan cheese.
  7. In an oven-safe dish, layer the bottom with a bit of the meat sauce, then place two cabbage leaves on top. Spoon some of the meat mixture into each leaf and roll them up tightly.
  8. Repeat until all leaves are filled and arranged in the dish, then top with remaining meat sauce and sprinkle with the rest of the Parmesan cheese.
  9. Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes to allow the cheese to brown slightly.
  10. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
