  • Green cabbage - 300 grams (approximately half a medium head)
  • Ground beef - 250 grams
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1 small, diced
  • Crushed tomatoes - 200 grams (canned)
  • Italian seasoning - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese - 100 grams
  • Parmesan cheese - 30 grams, grated
  • Fresh basil - a handful, chopped (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Remove the core from the cabbage and slice it into thin strips to create 'noodles'.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat, then add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  6. In a large baking dish, layer half of the cabbage noodles at the bottom.
  7. Spread half of the meat mixture over the cabbage, then sprinkle with half of the mozzarella cheese.
  8. Repeat the layers with the remaining cabbage, meat mixture, and top with the rest of the mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
  9. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  11. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before garnishing with chopped fresh basil. Serve warm.
