Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 100 grams
  • Yellow split moong dal - 50 grams
  • Mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, beans) - 150 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 4 cups
  • Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and yellow moong dal together under cold water until the water runs clear, then drain and set aside.
  2. In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onion, garlic, and ginger to the pot. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent.
  4. Stir in the mixed vegetables and cook for about 5 minutes, allowing them to soften.
  5. Add the rinsed rice and dal to the pot, along with turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well to coat the grains with the spices.
  6. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and the water is absorbed.
  7. Remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
  8. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
