Ingredients

  • Black lentils (whole urad dal) - 100 grams
  • Red kidney beans - 50 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 large, pureed
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coconut cream - 200 ml
  • Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish
  • Water - 4 cups

Steps

  1. Soak the black lentils and red kidney beans in water for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain and rinse the lentils and beans, then add them to a large pot with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 30-40 minutes, until they are soft.
  3. In a separate pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they are golden brown.
  5. Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  6. Add the pureed tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are well incorporated and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
  7. Once the lentils and beans are cooked, add them to the tomato mixture along with any remaining cooking water. Stir well.
  8. Add the coconut cream and garam masala, mix thoroughly, and let it simmer for another 15-20 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
