Ingredients
- Black lentils (whole urad dal) - 100 grams
- Red kidney beans - 50 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 large, pureed
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Coconut cream - 200 ml
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Fresh cilantro - for garnish
- Water - 4 cups
Steps
- Soak the black lentils and red kidney beans in water for at least 6 hours or overnight.
- Drain and rinse the lentils and beans, then add them to a large pot with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 30-40 minutes, until they are soft.
- In a separate pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until they are golden brown.
- Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the pureed tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are well incorporated and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
- Once the lentils and beans are cooked, add them to the tomato mixture along with any remaining cooking water. Stir well.
- Add the coconut cream and garam masala, mix thoroughly, and let it simmer for another 15-20 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
