- Black urad dal - 100 grams
- Tomatoes - 2 medium, chopped
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Coconut milk - 200 ml
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Fresh coriander - for garnish
- Water - 500 ml
Steps
- Rinse the black urad dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for at least 30 minutes.
- In a pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add the chopped onion to the pot and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili, cooking for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes break down and the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Drain the soaked dal and add it to the pot, stirring to combine with the spice mixture.
- Pour in 500 ml of water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the dal is tender.
- Stir in the coconut milk and garam masala, and cook uncovered for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
