Ingredients

  • Black urad dal - 100 grams
  • Tomatoes - 2 medium, chopped
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Coconut milk - 200 ml
  • Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander - for garnish
  • Water - 500 ml

Steps

  1. Rinse the black urad dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the pot and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili, cooking for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes break down and the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Drain the soaked dal and add it to the pot, stirring to combine with the spice mixture.
  7. Pour in 500 ml of water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the dal is tender.
  8. Stir in the coconut milk and garam masala, and cook uncovered for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
