Ingredients
- Tomatoes - 200 grams (about 2 medium-sized)
- Tamarind paste - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 500 milliliters
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
- Rasam powder - 2 teaspoons
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Curry leaves - 6-8 leaves
- Fresh coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Salt - to taste
- Oil - 1 teaspoon
Steps
- Chop the tomatoes into small pieces and set aside.
- In a pot, heat 1 teaspoon of oil over medium heat and add the mustard seeds. Wait for them to splutter.
- Add the cumin seeds and black pepper to the oil, followed by the slit green chili and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes to the pot and cook until they soften, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the turmeric powder and rasam powder, cooking for another minute.
- Add the tamarind paste and water, and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Season with salt to taste and stir in the chopped coriander leaves just before serving.
- Serve hot, optionally with a side of steamed rice or as is.
