Ingredients

  • Tomatoes - 200 grams (about 2 medium-sized)
  • Tamarind paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Water - 500 milliliters
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Rasam powder - 2 teaspoons
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Curry leaves - 6-8 leaves
  • Fresh coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. Chop the tomatoes into small pieces and set aside.
  2. In a pot, heat 1 teaspoon of oil over medium heat and add the mustard seeds. Wait for them to splutter.
  3. Add the cumin seeds and black pepper to the oil, followed by the slit green chili and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes to the pot and cook until they soften, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in the turmeric powder and rasam powder, cooking for another minute.
  6. Add the tamarind paste and water, and bring the mixture to a boil.
  7. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  8. Season with salt to taste and stir in the chopped coriander leaves just before serving.
  9. Serve hot, optionally with a side of steamed rice or as is.
