Ingredients
- Basmati rice - 1 cup
- Tomatoes - 2 medium, chopped
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Oil - 2 tablespoons
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
- Water - 2 cups
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
- In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat and add the cumin seeds. Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
- Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Cook for another minute until aromatic.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot, mixing well with the tomato mixture.
- Pour in the 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot.
- Cook for about 15 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and sprinkle garam masala on top.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
