- Basmati rice - 1 cup
- Chicken, cut into pieces - 300 grams
- Yogurt - 1/2 cup
- Onion, thinly sliced - 1 medium
- Tomato, chopped - 1 medium
- Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
- Green chilies, slit - 2
- Cilantro, chopped - 2 tablespoons
- Mint leaves, chopped - 2 tablespoons
- Biryani masala - 2 teaspoons
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Cooking oil - 3 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 2 cups
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Wash the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- In a bowl, marinate the chicken with yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, biryani masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a deep pot over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Fry until they turn golden brown.
- Add the marinated chicken to the pot and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chicken is browned.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, green chilies, cilantro, and mint leaves. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Gently mix everything together.
- Pour in 2 cups of water and add lemon juice. Bring it to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight lid, and let it cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Turn off the heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes before serving.
