Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 1 cup
  • Chicken, cut into pieces - 300 grams
  • Yogurt - 1/2 cup
  • Onion, thinly sliced - 1 medium
  • Tomato, chopped - 1 medium
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Green chilies, slit - 2
  • Cilantro, chopped - 2 tablespoons
  • Mint leaves, chopped - 2 tablespoons
  • Biryani masala - 2 teaspoons
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cooking oil - 3 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. Wash the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, marinate the chicken with yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, biryani masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pot over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Fry until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add the marinated chicken to the pot and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chicken is browned.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, green chilies, cilantro, and mint leaves. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  6. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Gently mix everything together.
  7. Pour in 2 cups of water and add lemon juice. Bring it to a boil.
  8. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight lid, and let it cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  9. Turn off the heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes before serving.
