Ingredients

  • Gram flour (besan) - 100 grams
  • Yogurt - 100 grams
  • Water - 200 ml
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, pureed
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine gram flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, and water to form a smooth dough. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into cylindrical shapes (about 2 cm thick).
  3. In a large pot of boiling water, gently drop the rolled dumplings (gatte) and cook for about 10-12 minutes until they float to the surface. Remove and set aside.
  4. In a pan, heat oil over medium heat and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  5. Stir in ginger-garlic paste and cook for another minute before adding the pureed tomato. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture.
  6. Add coriander powder, remaining turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Reduce the heat and add yogurt slowly, stirring continuously to avoid curdling. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  8. Add the cooked gatte to the gravy and mix gently. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes to blend the flavors.
  9. Finish with garam masala and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
