Ingredients

  • Rice flour - 200 grams
  • Grated coconut - 100 grams
  • Water - 250 ml
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cardamom powder - 1/4 teaspoon (optional)
  • Banana - 1 (for serving)
  • Sugar or jaggery - to taste (for serving)

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine rice flour and salt. Add water gradually and mix until you achieve a crumbly, moist texture.
  2. Add half of the grated coconut to the flour mixture and mix well. If using, also add cardamom powder.
  3. Prepare a puttu maker or a steamer by filling the lower compartment with water and bringing it to a boil.
  4. Layer the puttu maker starting with a spoonful of the remaining grated coconut at the bottom.
  5. Next, fill the rest of the space with the rice flour mixture, leaving some space at the top for steam to circulate.
  6. Add another layer of grated coconut on top.
  7. Place the puttu maker over the boiling water and steam for about 10-15 minutes, or until you see steam escaping from the holes.
  8. Once done, remove from heat and let it cool for a minute. Carefully push the puttu out using the stick provided with the puttu maker.
  9. Serve hot with sliced banana and sugar or jaggery on the side.
