- Cooked rice - 200 grams
- Tamarind paste - 2 tablespoons
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Dried red chilies - 2
- Chana dal (split chickpeas) - 2 tablespoons
- Urad dal (split black gram) - 2 tablespoons
- Sesame oil - 3 tablespoons
- Curry leaves - 10 leaves
- Salt - to taste
- Jaggery (grated) - 1 teaspoon
- Water - 150 ml
Steps
- Heat sesame oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Add mustard seeds and wait until they splutter.
- Add cumin seeds, dried red chilies, chana dal, and urad dal; sauté until the dals turn golden brown.
- Add curry leaves and turmeric powder, and sauté for a minute.
- In a separate bowl, mix tamarind paste with water, then add this mixture to the pan.
- Add salt and jaggery, and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened.
- Add the cooked rice to the tamarind mixture, and stir well to combine, ensuring the rice is evenly coated with the spice mix.
- Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
