Ingredients

  • Prawns - 200 grams, cleaned and deveined
  • Rice flour - 150 grams
  • Fresh grated coconut - 100 grams
  • Water - 200 ml
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Green chili - 1, finely chopped
  • Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coconut oil - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. In a bowl, mix the rice flour with 100 ml of water and a pinch of salt until it resembles wet sand. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  2. In a pan, heat coconut oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and allow them to pop, then add chopped onions, ginger, and green chili. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
  3. Add the cleaned prawns to the pan and cook until they turn pink, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the grated coconut, cilantro, and salt. Mix well and remove from heat.
  4. Take a steaming setup or a puttu maker. Layer the rice flour mixture and prawn-coconut mixture alternately, starting with the rice flour at the bottom.
  5. Steam the puttu for about 15-20 minutes until cooked through. Once done, carefully remove from the steamer.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with additional cilantro and a squeeze of lemon juice if desired.
