  • Water - 4 cups (1 liter)
  • Ghee - 2 tablespoons (30g)
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon (finely chopped)
  • Cashews - 2 tablespoons (chopped)
  • Curry leaves - 10 leaves
  • Salt - to taste

Steps

  1. Rinse the rice and moong dal together under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
  2. In a pot, add the rinsed rice and moong dal along with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice and dal are soft and cooked through.
  4. While the rice and dal are cooking, heat ghee in a small pan over medium heat.
  5. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter, then add black pepper, chopped ginger, cashews, and curry leaves. Sauté until the cashews turn golden brown.
  6. Once the rice and dal are cooked, add the sautéed mixture to the pot and stir well. Season with salt to taste.
  7. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes on low heat, stirring gently to combine all the flavors.
  8. Serve hot with coconut chutney or sambar on the side.
