Ingredients

  • Moong dal - 50 grams
  • Rice - 50 grams
  • Water - 800 ml
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Ghee or oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Curry leaves - 5-6 leaves
  • Chopped coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. Rinse the moong dal and rice together under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pot, add the rinsed moong dal, rice, and 800 ml of water. Bring it to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes until the dal and rice are soft.
  4. In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, black pepper, and curry leaves, and sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the grated ginger and turmeric powder, and cook for another minute.
  6. Pour this tempering into the cooked dal and rice mixture. Add salt to taste and mix well.
  7. Use a hand blender to puree the soup to your desired consistency, adding more water if needed.
  8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and a squeeze of lemon juice before serving.
