Ingredients

  • Pasta (any shape) - 150 grams
  • Masoor Dal (red lentils) - 100 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chili - 1, slit (optional)
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil (vegetable or ghee) - 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish
  • Lemon - 1, cut into wedges

Steps

  1. Rinse the masoor dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
  2. In a pot, bring 500 ml of water to a boil, add the soaked masoor dal, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the lentils are soft, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a separate pot, cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  4. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  5. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  6. Add the chopped tomato and green chili, cooking until the tomato softens, about 3-4 minutes.
  7. Stir in the cooked masoor dal, coriander powder, and garam masala, mixing well. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, adding a splash of water if needed to keep it moist.
  8. Gently fold in the cooked pasta and mix until well combined. Adjust seasoning with salt if necessary.
  9. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro and lemon wedges on the side.
