Ingredients

  • Pasta (any shape) - 150 grams
  • Red lentils - 100 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Green chili - 1, slit (optional)
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish
  • Water - 500 milliliters

Steps

  1. Rinse the red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them in water for 15 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat and add the cumin seeds. Let them sizzle for about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Sauté for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes break down and the mixture becomes saucy, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Drain the soaked lentils and add them to the pot along with 500 milliliters of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes until the lentils are tender.
  7. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in a separate pot according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  8. Once the lentils are cooked, stir in the garam masala and adjust salt if necessary. Add the drained pasta into the lentil mixture and gently mix until well combined.
  9. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
