Ingredients
- Whole wheat pasta - 120 grams
- Red lentils (masoor dal) - 100 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, diced
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit (optional)
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Fresh cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 4 cups
Steps
- In a pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the whole wheat pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In the same pot, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili (if using). Sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the diced tomato and cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes. Then add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the red lentils and 2 cups of water to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and cooked through.
- In the last few minutes of cooking, add the garam masala and adjust salt to taste.
- Combine the cooked pasta with the daal mixture and mix well. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
