Ingredients
- Basmati rice - 1/2 cup
- Moong dal (yellow split lentils) - 1/4 cup
- Paneer (cottage cheese) - 150 grams, cubed
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves - for garnish
- Oil or ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Water - 4 cups
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and moong dal together under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for 20 minutes.
- In a large pot or pressure cooker, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until they turn golden brown. Then, add the ginger, garlic, and green chili, and cook for another minute.
- Stir in the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomato softens and the oil starts to separate.
- Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot. Mix well to combine with the spices.
- Add 4 cups of water and bring to a boil. If using a pressure cooker, cover and cook for 2 whistles; if using a regular pot, cover and simmer for about 15-20 minutes until the rice and dal are cooked through and the water is absorbed.
- Once cooked, gently fold in the cubed paneer and garam masala. Let it sit covered for 5 minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh coriander leaves.
