Ingredients

  • Mutton (bone-in) - 300 grams
  • Basmati rice - 150 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Yogurt - 50 grams
  • Coconut milk - 100 ml
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak it in water for 30 minutes, then drain.
  2. Heat cooking oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Then add the ginger-garlic paste and green chili, cooking for an additional 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften. Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Add the mutton pieces to the pot, coating them with the spice mixture. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the mutton is browned.
  6. Reduce the heat and add yogurt and coconut milk. Stir to combine, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 30-35 minutes until the mutton is tender.
  7. In a separate pot, bring 300 ml of water to a boil. Add the soaked basmati rice and a pinch of salt. Cook until the rice is tender and water is absorbed, about 15 minutes.
  8. Once the mutton is cooked, sprinkle garam masala over it and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  9. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve it on plates topped with the mutton curry. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
