Ingredients
- Rice flour - 100 grams
- Water - 150 ml
- Jaggery - 50 grams
- Grated coconut - 50 grams
- Cardamom powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ghee (clarified butter) - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - a pinch
- Cashews - 10 pieces (chopped)
Steps
- In a saucepan, heat 150 ml of water, add a pinch of salt, and bring it to a boil.
- Once boiling, add 100 grams of rice flour gradually while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until it forms a smooth dough.
- Remove the dough from heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Once cool, knead it until smooth.
- In a separate pan, melt 50 grams of jaggery with 2 tablespoons of water over low heat. Stir until the jaggery dissolves.
- Add 50 grams of grated coconut and 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom powder to the jaggery syrup. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the mixture thickens. Add chopped cashews and mix well. Let it cool.
- Divide the rice dough into small balls (about 25 grams each). Flatten each ball into a small disc in your palm.
- Place a teaspoon of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center of the disc. Carefully fold the edges to cover the filling and shape it into a modak.
- Repeat the process for all the dough and filling. You should get about 6-8 modaks.
- Steam the modaks in a steamer or a idli maker for about 10-12 minutes until they turn glossy.
- Serve warm, drizzled with a little ghee if desired.
