- Basmati rice - 150 grams
- Chicken breast, boneless - 300 grams, cut into pieces
- Fresh methi (fenugreek) leaves - 50 grams, chopped
- Onion - 1 medium, thinly sliced
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Yogurt - 100 grams
- Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Biryani masala - 2 teaspoons
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cilantro (coriander leaves) - for garnish
- Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 300 ml
Steps
- Wash the basmati rice under running water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and green chili, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and biryani masala. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
- Mix in the chicken pieces and cook until they are no longer pink.
- Stir in the yogurt and chopped methi leaves, and season with salt. Cook for about 5 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot, mixing gently with the chicken mixture.
- Pour in 300 ml of water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes until the rice is cooked and has absorbed the water.
- Once done, turn off the heat and let it rest for another 10 minutes, covered.
- Fluff the biryani with a fork, garnish with chopped cilantro, and serve hot.
