Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 150 grams
  • Chicken breast, boneless - 300 grams, cut into pieces
  • Fresh methi (fenugreek) leaves - 50 grams, chopped
  • Onion - 1 medium, thinly sliced
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Yogurt - 100 grams
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Biryani masala - 2 teaspoons
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cilantro (coriander leaves) - for garnish
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 300 ml

Steps

  1. Wash the basmati rice under running water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
  3. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and green chili, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and biryani masala. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  6. Mix in the chicken pieces and cook until they are no longer pink.
  7. Stir in the yogurt and chopped methi leaves, and season with salt. Cook for about 5 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.
  8. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot, mixing gently with the chicken mixture.
  9. Pour in 300 ml of water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes until the rice is cooked and has absorbed the water.
  10. Once done, turn off the heat and let it rest for another 10 minutes, covered.
  11. Fluff the biryani with a fork, garnish with chopped cilantro, and serve hot.
