- Masoor Dal (red lentils) - 100 grams
- Basmati Rice - 100 grams
- Water - 4 cups
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Green Chili - 1, slit
- Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin Seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee or Oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander Leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the masoor dal and basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak both in water for 15 minutes, then drain.
- In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent.
- Stir in the grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato and turmeric powder. Cook until the tomato softens.
- Add the drained masoor dal and basmati rice to the pot. Stir to combine with the onion-tomato mixture.
- Pour in 4 cups of water and add salt to taste. Bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the dal and rice are cooked and the consistency is creamy.
- Turn off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with yogurt or pickle.
