Ingredients

  • Masoor dal (red lentils) - 100 grams
  • Boiled potato - 1 medium (about 150 grams)
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Green chili - 1, finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Rice flour - 2 tablespoons (for coating)
  • Oil - for shallow frying

Steps

  1. Rinse the masoor dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 2 hours.
  2. Drain the soaked dal and blend it into a coarse paste using a food processor, adding a little water if necessary.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed boiled potato, blended dal, chopped onion, grated ginger, green chili, coriander leaves, cumin powder, garam masala, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  4. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into round patties.
  5. Spread the rice flour on a plate and coat each patty lightly with it on both sides.
  6. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan.
  7. Once the oil is hot, shallow fry the patties in batches until they are golden brown on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  8. Remove the cooked tikki from the pan and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
  9. Serve hot with mint chutney or yogurt dip.
