Ingredients
- Masoor dal (red lentils) - 100 grams
- Water - 500 ml
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
- Oil (vegetable or ghee) - 2 tablespoons
Steps
- Rinse the masoor dal under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
- In a medium pot, add the rinsed dal and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
- In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, allowing them to splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften, about 3-4 minutes.
- Once the dal is cooked, add it to the onion-tomato mixture. Stir well and adjust the consistency with water if needed.
- Add garam masala and mix well. Allow to simmer for another 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or gluten-free naan.
