Ingredients

  • Masoor dal (red lentils) - 100 grams
  • Water - 500 ml
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Oil (vegetable or ghee) - 2 tablespoons

Steps

  1. Rinse the masoor dal under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a medium pot, add the rinsed dal and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
  3. In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, allowing them to splutter.
  4. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  5. Stir in minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  6. Add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften, about 3-4 minutes.
  7. Once the dal is cooked, add it to the onion-tomato mixture. Stir well and adjust the consistency with water if needed.
  8. Add garam masala and mix well. Allow to simmer for another 5 minutes.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or gluten-free naan.
