- Moong dal (split yellow mung beans) - 100 grams
- Water - 500 ml
- Onion (finely chopped) - 1 medium
- Tomato (chopped) - 1 medium
- Green chili (slit) - 1
- Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic (minced) - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Oil (for cooking) - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Rinse the moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
- In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat and add cumin seeds. Once they start to splutter, add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili. Sauté for another minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomato softens and oil begins to separate.
- Drain the soaked moong dal and add it to the pan along with 500 ml of water. Stir well and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
- Once cooked, stir in the garam masala and chopped coriander leaves. Adjust salt if needed.
- Remove from heat, drizzle with lemon juice, and serve hot.
