Ingredients

  • Water - 500 ml
  • Black tea leaves - 2 tsp
  • Fresh ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Cardamom pods - 4, crushed
  • Cloves - 2
  • Cinnamon stick - 1 small piece
  • Black peppercorns - 2, crushed
  • Plant-based milk (such as almond or oat) - 200 ml
  • Sweetener (maple syrup or agave) - 1-2 tsp, to taste

Steps

  1. In a saucepan, bring 500 ml of water to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Once boiling, add the grated ginger, crushed cardamom pods, cloves, cinnamon stick, and crushed black peppercorns.
  3. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the spices to infuse the water.
  4. Add 2 teaspoons of black tea leaves to the saucepan and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes, depending on how strong you prefer your tea.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the tea into another pot or directly into cups to remove the spices and tea leaves.
  6. In the same saucepan, gently heat the 200 ml of plant-based milk until warm but not boiling.
  7. Combine the strained tea and warmed plant-based milk, stirring well.
  8. Sweeten with 1-2 teaspoons of maple syrup or agave, adjusting to your taste.
  9. Serve hot in cups and enjoy your homemade Masala Chai.
