- Chicken, cut into pieces - 500 grams
- Coconut, grated - 100 grams
- Onion, finely chopped - 1 medium (150 grams)
- Garlic, minced - 4 cloves
- Ginger, minced - 1 inch piece
- Green chilies, slit - 2
- Coriander powder - 2 teaspoons
- Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 10 leaves
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Oil (coconut or vegetable) - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped - for garnish
Steps
- Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Stir in minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chicken pieces and sauté until they are lightly browned on all sides.
- In a bowl, mix together coriander powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt with a little water to form a paste.
- Add the spice paste to the chicken and mix well. Cook for 5 minutes, allowing the spices to coat the chicken.
- Add grated coconut and curry leaves. Mix everything together and cook on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the mixture is dry.
- Sprinkle garam masala and lemon juice over the chicken. Stir well and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
