Ingredients

  • Red lentils - 100 grams
  • Water - 300 ml
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Green chili - 1, finely chopped
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon (or to taste)
  • Fresh coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Breadcrumbs - 50 grams
  • Oil - for frying (about 2 tablespoons)
  • Burger buns - 2
  • Lettuce leaves - 2
  • Tomato - 1 medium, sliced
  • Cucumber - 1 small, sliced
  • Yogurt - 2 tablespoons (optional, for serving)

Steps

  1. Rinse the red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. In a pot, combine the lentils and water, then bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and water is mostly absorbed.
  2. In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, ginger, and green chili. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
  3. Add the coriander powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, and salt to the onion mixture. Stir and cook for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Combine the cooked lentils, sautéed onion mixture, garam masala, fresh coriander leaves, and breadcrumbs in a bowl. Mix well and mash slightly until combined. Let the mixture cool for a few minutes.
  5. Divide the lentil mixture into two equal portions and shape them into patties.
  6. In the same pan, add the remaining oil and heat over medium heat. Fry the lentil patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. To assemble the burgers, place a lettuce leaf on each burger bun, followed by a lentil patty, sliced tomato, and cucumber. Add yogurt on top if desired, then close the buns.
  8. Serve the lentil burgers warm with your favorite side.
