Ingredients

  • Fish fillets (preferably mackerel or pomfret) - 200 grams
  • Coconut milk - 200 ml
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Water - 300 ml

Steps

  1. In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  2. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Sauté for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes.
  5. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer.
  6. Add the fish fillets and curry leaves to the pot. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
  7. Stir in the coconut milk and garam masala. Allow it to simmer for another 5 minutes to combine the flavors.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  9. Serve hot as a soup or with a side of rice.
