Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 100 grams
  • Yellow split moong dal - 50 grams
  • Ghee - 2 tablespoons
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger, grated - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chili, slit - 1
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 500 milliliters
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and yellow split moong dal under running water until the water runs clear, then soak them together for 15 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add grated ginger and slit green chili to the pot, sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  4. Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot along with turmeric powder and salt. Stir well to mix everything.
  5. Pour in 500 milliliters of water and bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and soft.
  7. Turn off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  8. Garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
