Ingredients
- Basmati rice - 1/2 cup
- Moong dal (split yellow lentils) - 1/2 cup
- Water - 4 cups
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
- Green chili (finely chopped) - 1 small
- Carrot (finely chopped) - 1/2 medium
- Peas - 1/4 cup
- Coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Oil - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them together in water for 15-20 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat and add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter.
- Add the grated ginger and chopped green chili to the pot, sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the chopped carrot and peas to the pot, and sauté for an additional 2 minutes.
- Stir in the soaked rice and dal mix, along with the turmeric powder and salt. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
- Pour in the 4 cups of water, and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the rice and dal are cooked and have absorbed the water.
- Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
