Ingredients

  • Rice flour - 100 grams
  • Coconut milk - 200 ml
  • Jaggery (grated) - 50 grams
  • Fresh grated coconut - 50 grams
  • Water - 150 ml
  • Cardamom powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Chopped nuts (cashews and almonds) - 20 grams
  • Black sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. In a bowl, mix rice flour with a pinch of salt and enough water to form a smooth dough. Cover it with a cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. In a saucepan, combine fresh grated coconut, grated jaggery, and half of the cardamom powder. Cook over low heat until the jaggery melts and the mixture thickens slightly, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Divide the rice flour dough into small balls. Flatten each ball into a small disc, place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery mixture in the center, and fold the edges over to form a dumpling. Seal well to prevent the filling from leaking.
  4. Bring 150 ml of water to a boil in a steamer or a pot. Place the dumplings in the steamer and steam for about 10-12 minutes until they are cooked through. Set aside.
  5. In a separate pot, heat the coconut milk over low heat. Add the remaining cardamom powder, a pinch of salt, and the steamed dumplings. Allow it to simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Serve the Kheer Puli warm, garnished with chopped nuts and black sesame seeds.
