Ingredients
- Yellow split peas - 1 cup (200g)
- Water - 4 cups (1 liter)
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Mustard oil - 2 tablespoons
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1-inch piece, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the yellow split peas under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a pot, boil 4 cups of water and add the rinsed yellow split peas, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for about 25-30 minutes or until the peas are soft and cooked through.
- In a separate pan, heat mustard oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili to the oil. Sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add chopped onions to the pan and cook until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- Once the yellow split peas are cooked, add the sautéed mixture to the pot and stir well. Adjust salt if necessary and let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
