  • Water - 4 cups (1 liter)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Mustard oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1-inch piece, grated
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the yellow split peas under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pot, boil 4 cups of water and add the rinsed yellow split peas, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for about 25-30 minutes or until the peas are soft and cooked through.
  3. In a separate pan, heat mustard oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili to the oil. Sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Add chopped onions to the pan and cook until they turn golden brown.
  6. Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  7. Once the yellow split peas are cooked, add the sautéed mixture to the pot and stir well. Adjust salt if necessary and let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
