- Masoor dal (red lentils) - 100 grams
- Coconut oil - 2 tablespoons
- Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic (minced) - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Fresh cilantro (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 500 milliliters
Steps
- Rinse the masoor dal under cold water until the water runs clear and set aside.
- In a pot, heat coconut oil over medium heat and add cumin seeds, allowing them to sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add grated ginger and minced garlic to the pot, sautéing until fragrant (about 1 minute).
- Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder, cooking for an additional 30 seconds to release the spices' aromas.
- Add the rinsed masoor dal to the pot, followed by 500 milliliters of water and salt to taste.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and cooked through.
- Once cooked, remove from heat and stir in chopped cilantro and lemon juice.
- Serve hot, garnished with additional cilantro if desired.
