- Toor dal - 100 grams
- Water - 500 ml
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Dried red chili - 1
- Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed toor dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 3 whistles, then let the pressure release naturally.
- In a pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the dried red chili and curry leaves.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Then add the chopped tomato and slit green chili. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
- Stir in the coriander powder and garam masala, cooking for another minute.
- Add the cooked dal to the onion-tomato mixture and mix well. Adjust the consistency with water if needed and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
