  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Ghee - 2 tablespoons
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Dried red chili - 1
  • Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed toor dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 3 whistles, then let the pressure release naturally.
  3. In a pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the dried red chili and curry leaves.
  4. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Then add the chopped tomato and slit green chili. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  5. Stir in the coriander powder and garam masala, cooking for another minute.
  6. Add the cooked dal to the onion-tomato mixture and mix well. Adjust the consistency with water if needed and simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
