Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 1 cup
  • Toor dal (pigeon peas) - 1/2 cup
  • Mixed vegetables (carrot, beans, peas) - 1 cup, chopped
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chilies - 2, slit
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sambar powder - 2 teaspoons
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - 10 leaves
  • Ghee (clarified butter) - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 4 cups

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and toor dal separately under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker, heat ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds; let them splutter.
  3. Add curry leaves, chopped onions, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Stir in the grated ginger and minced garlic, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and sambar powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  6. Add mixed vegetables and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Combine the rinsed rice and toor dal into the cooker. Add 4 cups of water and salt to taste.
  8. Close the lid and cook for 4 whistles on medium heat. Once done, wait for the pressure to release naturally.
  9. Open the lid, stir the bisibelebath gently, and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
