Ingredients
- Basmati rice - 1 cup
- Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 1/2 cup
- Mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas) - 1 cup, chopped
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chilies - 2, slit
- Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Bisi Bele Bath powder - 2 tablespoons
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 10 leaves
- Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 4 cups
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and toor dal together under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them for about 20 minutes.
- In a pressure cooker or large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add curry leaves, chopped onions, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- Stir in the ginger and garlic, and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
- Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot along with the mixed vegetables, Bisi Bele Bath powder, and salt.
- Pour in 4 cups of water and stir well. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for 3 whistles (about 15 minutes). If using a pot, cover and simmer for about 25-30 minutes or until everything is cooked through.
- Once cooked, allow the pressure to release naturally. Open the lid and fluff the Bisi Bele Bath gently with a fork.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
