Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 1 cup
  • Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 1/2 cup
  • Mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas) - 1 cup, chopped
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chilies - 2, slit
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece, grated
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Bisi Bele Bath powder - 2 tablespoons
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - 10 leaves
  • Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 4 cups
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and toor dal together under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them for about 20 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker or large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add curry leaves, chopped onions, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Stir in the ginger and garlic, and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and turmeric powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  6. Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot along with the mixed vegetables, Bisi Bele Bath powder, and salt.
  7. Pour in 4 cups of water and stir well. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for 3 whistles (about 15 minutes). If using a pot, cover and simmer for about 25-30 minutes or until everything is cooked through.
  8. Once cooked, allow the pressure to release naturally. Open the lid and fluff the Bisi Bele Bath gently with a fork.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
