Ingredients
- Kappa (tapioca) - 250 grams, peeled and cubed
- Fish (preferably kingfish or pomfret) - 300 grams, cut into pieces
- Coconut oil - 2 tablespoons
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 10 leaves
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, minced
- Garlic - 1 teaspoon, minced
- Green chilies - 2, slit
- Turmeric powder - ½ teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Coconut milk - 200 ml
- Salt - to taste
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- In a large pot, add the cubed kappa and enough water to submerge it. Add a pinch of salt and boil until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a separate pan, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add curry leaves, chopped onion, ginger, garlic, and green chilies to the oil. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
- Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook until the tomatoes soften, about 5 minutes.
- Add the fish pieces to the pan and gently mix to coat them with the spices. Cook for 5 minutes, allowing the fish to absorb the flavors.
- Pour in the coconut milk and add salt to taste. Let it simmer for another 10 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
- Add lemon juice and stir gently. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
- To serve, place a portion of kappa on a plate and ladle the meen curry over it. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
