Ingredients

  • Whole wheat flour - 200 grams
  • Water - 120 milliliters
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ajwain (carom seeds) - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Oil (for kneading and cooking) - 1 tablespoon
  • Chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh coriander (for garnish) - a handful

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine whole wheat flour, salt, cumin powder, and ajwain.
  2. Gradually add water and knead the mixture into a soft dough. Add 1 tablespoon of oil while kneading.
  3. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  4. Divide the dough into 2 equal balls and roll each ball into a flat circle, about 6-7 inches in diameter.
  5. Sprinkle chili powder on top of one side of each roti for added flavor.
  6. Heat a kadai or heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat until hot.
  7. Place one roti on the kadai, chili powder side up, and cook for about 2 minutes or until bubbles form.
  8. Flip the roti and cook the other side for another 2 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula.
  9. Optional: For a tandoori effect, hold the roti with tongs and place it directly over the flame for a few seconds until charred.
  10. Remove the roti from the heat, and garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
