Ingredients

  • Mutton (bone-in, cut into pieces) - 400 grams
  • Onion (finely chopped) - 1 medium (150 grams)
  • Tomato (pureed) - 1 medium (100 grams)
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Green bell pepper (diced) - 1 medium (100 grams)
  • Red bell pepper (diced) - 1 medium (100 grams)
  • Kadai masala (or garam masala) - 2 teaspoons
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Fresh coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 1 cup

Steps

  1. Heat oil in a kadai or deep pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  3. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 1-2 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  4. Add the mutton pieces and sear them until they are browned on all sides.
  5. Mix in the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  6. Pour in the tomato puree and cook until the oil starts to separate from the mixture, about 5 minutes.
  7. Add the diced green and red bell peppers and mix well.
  8. Pour in the water, cover, and let it simmer on low heat for 30 minutes or until the mutton is tender and cooked through.
  9. Once done, sprinkle the kadai masala and chopped coriander leaves on top. Stir well and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  10. Serve hot with naan or rice.
