- Basmati rice - 1 cup (200g)
- Water - 2 cups (500ml)
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon (5g)
- Oil (coconut or vegetable) - 1 tablespoon (15ml)
- Onion (sliced) - 1 small (50g)
- Garlic (minced) - 1 clove
- Salt - to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves (chopped) - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
- In a saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the sliced onion and minced garlic to the pan, sautéing until the onion turns translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the saucepan, stirring gently to coat the rice in the oil and spices.
- Pour in the water and add salt to taste. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Once cooked, remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 5 minutes.
- Fluff the rice with a fork, garnish with chopped coriander leaves, and serve hot.
