Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 1 cup (200g)
  • Water - 2 cups (500ml)
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon (5g)
  • Oil (coconut or vegetable) - 1 tablespoon (15ml)
  • Onion (sliced) - 1 small (50g)
  • Garlic (minced) - 1 clove
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves (chopped) - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add the sliced onion and minced garlic to the pan, sautéing until the onion turns translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the saucepan, stirring gently to coat the rice in the oil and spices.
  5. Pour in the water and add salt to taste. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  6. Once cooked, remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 5 minutes.
  7. Fluff the rice with a fork, garnish with chopped coriander leaves, and serve hot.
