Ingredients

  • Wheat grains - 50 grams
  • Barley - 50 grams
  • Red lentils (masoor dal) - 50 grams
  • Split chickpeas (chana dal) - 50 grams
  • Beef or mutton, minced - 300 grams
  • Onion, finely sliced - 1 medium (100 grams)
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Green chilies, slit - 2
  • Cilantro, chopped - 2 tablespoons
  • Mint leaves, chopped - 2 tablespoons
  • Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper powder - to taste
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Water - 1.5 liters
  • Lemon wedges - for garnish
  • Fried onions - for garnish

Steps

  1. Soak the wheat, barley, red lentils, and split chickpeas in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the finely sliced onions and fry until golden brown.
  3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, and sauté for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Add the minced meat, salt, cumin powder, and black pepper. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, about 10-15 minutes.
  5. Drain the soaked grains and lentils, then add them to the pot. Stir well to combine with the meat mixture.
  6. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. After 2 hours, use a hand blender or a wooden spoon to mash the mixture until it reaches a smooth, porridge-like consistency.
  8. Add the garam masala, chopped cilantro, and mint leaves. Stir well and cook for an additional 15 minutes.
  9. Adjust seasoning if necessary and serve hot, garnished with fried onions and lemon wedges.
