- Basmati rice - 150 grams
- Fish fillets (such as salmon or tilapia) - 200 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, sliced
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
- Plain yogurt - 2 tablespoons
- Biryani masala - 1 tablespoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Fresh coriander leaves - a handful, chopped
- Fresh mint leaves - a handful, chopped
- Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 300 milliliters
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- In a bowl, marinate the fish fillets with yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, biryani masala, and salt. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until it softens and releases its juices.
- Gently add the marinated fish to the pot, cooking for about 5 minutes on each side until the fish is cooked through.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot along with water. Stir gently to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Once done, remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes.
- Fluff the biryani with a fork and garnish with chopped coriander and mint leaves before serving.
