  • Fish fillets (such as salmon or tilapia) - 200 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, sliced
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Plain yogurt - 2 tablespoons
  • Biryani masala - 1 tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Fresh coriander leaves - a handful, chopped
  • Fresh mint leaves - a handful, chopped
  • Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 300 milliliters

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, marinate the fish fillets with yogurt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, biryani masala, and salt. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
  3. In a large pot, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until it softens and releases its juices.
  6. Gently add the marinated fish to the pot, cooking for about 5 minutes on each side until the fish is cooked through.
  7. Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot along with water. Stir gently to combine.
  8. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  9. Once done, remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes.
  10. Fluff the biryani with a fork and garnish with chopped coriander and mint leaves before serving.
