Ingredients

  • Fish (preferably hilsa or any firm white fish) - 300 grams
  • Mustard seeds - 2 tablespoons
  • Green chilies - 4 (adjust to taste)
  • Turmeric powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon (adjust to taste)
  • Coconut (grated) - 2 tablespoons
  • Mustard oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh coriander leaves - a handful (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Soak the mustard seeds in water for about 15 minutes, then drain.
  2. In a blender, combine the soaked mustard seeds, green chilies, turmeric powder, and salt to make a smooth paste, adding a little water if necessary.
  3. In a bowl, mix the fish with the mustard paste and grated coconut, ensuring the fish is well-coated.
  4. Drizzle the mustard oil over the fish and mix gently.
  5. Transfer the fish mixture to a steaming dish or a small bowl that fits inside a steamer.
  6. Prepare a steamer by boiling water in the bottom pot, then place the dish with fish on the steamer rack.
  7. Cover and steam the fish for about 20 minutes, or until cooked through.
  8. Once cooked, carefully remove from the steamer, garnish with fresh coriander leaves, and serve hot.
