Ingredients

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Besan (gram flour) - 1/2 cup
  • Curd (yogurt) - 1/2 cup
  • Water - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Green chili - 1, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Wash the rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine besan, curd, turmeric powder, salt, and water to form a smooth batter.
  3. Add the soaked and drained rice to the batter and mix well. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  4. Grease a steaming dish or a thali and pour the batter into it, spreading it evenly.
  5. In a small pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped green chili, grated ginger, and curry leaves, sautéing for a minute.
  6. Pour this tempering over the batter in the steaming dish.
  7. Steam the batter for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Once done, let it cool for a few minutes, then cut into squares or diamond shapes.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve warm.
