Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 100 grams
  • Yellow moong dal (split yellow lentils) - 50 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 800 ml
  • Cilantro (fresh coriander) - a handful, chopped
  • Ghee or vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and yellow moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them together in water for 15 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, heat the ghee or vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, allowing them to splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Stir in the grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili, cooking for another minute.
  4. Add the chopped tomato and cook until it softens, then stir in the turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt.
  5. Drain the soaked rice and dal and add them to the pot, mixing well with the spices.
  6. Pour in 800 ml of water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes until the rice and dal are cooked and have absorbed the water.
  7. Once done, fluff with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
