Ingredients
- Basmati rice - 100 grams
- Yellow moong dal (split yellow lentils) - 50 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 800 ml
- Cilantro (fresh coriander) - a handful, chopped
- Ghee or vegetable oil - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and yellow moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them together in water for 15 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat the ghee or vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, allowing them to splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Stir in the grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili, cooking for another minute.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook until it softens, then stir in the turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt.
- Drain the soaked rice and dal and add them to the pot, mixing well with the spices.
- Pour in 800 ml of water, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes until the rice and dal are cooked and have absorbed the water.
- Once done, fluff with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
