- Yellow moong dal - 100 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves - for garnish
- Water - 3 cups
Steps
- Rinse the yellow moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
- In a pot, heat 1 tablespoon of ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil begins to separate, about 3-4 minutes.
- Drain the soaked dal and add it to the pot. Pour in 3 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
- Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more water if needed. Taste and adjust salt as necessary.
- In a small pan, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of ghee until hot, then pour it over the cooked dal for added richness.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
