Ingredients

  • Yellow moong dal - 100 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Ghee - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Water - 3 cups

Steps

  1. Rinse the yellow moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat 1 tablespoon of ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  3. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil begins to separate, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Drain the soaked dal and add it to the pot. Pour in 3 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
  7. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
  8. Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding more water if needed. Taste and adjust salt as necessary.
  9. In a small pan, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of ghee until hot, then pour it over the cooked dal for added richness.
  10. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
