Ingredients

  • Split yellow moong dal - 100 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Green chili - 1, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Rice flour - 2 tablespoons
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Oil - for frying

Steps

  1. Rinse the split yellow moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 2-3 hours.
  2. Drain the soaked dal and transfer it to a blender. Blend it coarsely without adding water.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the blended dal, chopped onion, green chili, grated ginger, coriander leaves, cumin seeds, salt, rice flour, turmeric powder, and black pepper. Mix well to form a thick batter.
  4. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
  5. Once the oil is hot, take small portions of the batter and shape them into flat discs (vada).
  6. Carefully slide the vadas into the hot oil and fry until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 4-5 minutes.
  7. Remove the vadas from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve hot with green chutney or tamarind sauce.
