Ingredients
- Yellow moong dal - 100 grams
- Gram flour (besan) - 50 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
- Oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
- Water - 500 ml
Steps
- Rinse the yellow moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak it in water for 15 minutes, then drain.
- In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds, allowing them to splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent. Then add the grated ginger and green chili, cooking for another 2 minutes.
- Stir in the chopped tomato and turmeric powder, cooking until the tomatoes soften.
- Add the soaked moong dal and 500 ml of water to the pot. Season with salt and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the dal is cooked through.
- In a separate bowl, mix the gram flour with a little water to form a smooth paste. Gradually add this mixture to the dal while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
- Cook for another 5-10 minutes, allowing the mixture to thicken. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if necessary.
- Add the curry leaves and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
