Ingredients

  • Yellow moong dal - 100 grams
  • Gram flour (besan) - 50 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Water - 500 ml

Steps

  1. Rinse the yellow moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak it in water for 15 minutes, then drain.
  2. In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds, allowing them to splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent. Then add the grated ginger and green chili, cooking for another 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomato and turmeric powder, cooking until the tomatoes soften.
  5. Add the soaked moong dal and 500 ml of water to the pot. Season with salt and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the dal is cooked through.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix the gram flour with a little water to form a smooth paste. Gradually add this mixture to the dal while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  7. Cook for another 5-10 minutes, allowing the mixture to thicken. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if necessary.
  8. Add the curry leaves and garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
