- Red lentils (masoor dal) - 100 grams
- Basmati rice - 100 grams
- Fresh fenugreek leaves (methi) - 50 grams, chopped
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Garlic - 1 clove, minced
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Green chili - 1, slit (optional)
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 4 cups
- Oil or ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the red lentils and basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them in water for about 15 minutes.
- In a pot, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat. Add the cumin and mustard seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent. Then, add the grated ginger, minced garlic, and green chili. Sauté for another minute.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook until it softens, about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the turmeric powder and chopped fenugreek leaves, cooking for another 2 minutes.
- Drain the soaked lentils and rice, then add them to the pot. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
- Pour in the water and add salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice and lentils are cooked and soft.
- Remove from heat, let it sit covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with yogurt or pickles.
